In this chapter we examine new concepts on organizations and how the information technology fits on them. In the "age of information" companies are re-thinking their structure. They are focusing their attention on their business processes, and how to organize their efforts and resources to successfully accomplish their mission. Indeed, the world is evolving at an ever increasing pace. There-fore, the challenge that faces all kind of organizations is not only to adapt themselves to a new market dynamics, but also to develop a structure that is flexible enough to answer seamlessly to future challenges. It is widely accepted that companies are putting their future at risk unless they make a good use of the information resource in order to harness the competition dynamics onto their behalf. We also describe how the long due restructuring process of EMBRAPA has been undertaken. New concepts, methodologies and tools such as business processes, information engineering and ICASE are crucial to this process. |
